NDS & ALA's Emerging Leaders Program Overview


The National Disability Services (NDS) has partnered with Australasian Leadership Academy (ALA) to support the rapid advancement of frontline and mid-level managers in the disability sector.


Developed specifically for emerging leaders, utilising Skillsoft Global Leadership content


Promoting and enhancing the critical skills involved in leading & managing others.


The Disability Leadership Program is designed to assist in the development of emerging, high potential managers across the NDS sectors and industries. During a thought provoking ten to 12 month journey, participants enhance their own understanding of leadership and engage in a powerful, shared learning experience.

BLENDED eLEARNING PROGRAM

We offer individuals a self-paced, blended eLearning program with additional 1:1 coaching / mentoring, combined with business improvement initiatives applied in the workplace.

ALA online Training Portal features global leadership learning material in digestible portions, personalisation to serve content most relevant to you and the qualification of choice. Participants receive a 12 month licence to ALA Skillport, including RPL / RCC, individual learning plans, participant guides & instructions, templates, research tasks & workplace application activities, a variety of assessment methodologies and a National AQF Qualification on successful completion.

About the Program - FAQs
What will I learn?
  • If you’re not in a current manager’s role, this program will build your skills and knowledge to take on a leadership position by focusing on what you already know and placing it into a modern business framework. This program can give you the confidence to really advance in your career.
  • This nationally recognised qualification is aimed at giving aspiring supervisors the specialised knowledge to communicate effectively as a workplace leader, implement an operational plan, promote innovation, lead effective workplace relationships & teams   and implement customer service strategies.
  • You will learn how to communicate effectively as a workplace leader, implement an operational plan, promote innovation, lead effective workplace relationships & teams   and implement customer service strategies.
  • Proficiency in managing projects and developing work priorities will be taught as well as skills for planning and completing your own work on time and on schedule.
How does the Program work?

The program combines Business Courses, Videos, Business Impact and Challenge series from Skillsoft’s eLearning content.

The program is broken into 5 Themes, each containing 2 to 3 modules each. After you have completed the eLearning content for each module, you will be given the opportunity to apply your learning on the job through our “Research Tasks & Workplace Application” activities on ALA Training Portal.

Each month the program work gives participants an easily digestible amount of information that won't overload or impact on your work life. This allows you to better retain and transfer the knowledge of each module into your workplace as well as throughout the remainder of the program.

Additionally, participants are required to complete a workplace business improvement initiative and mentoring sessions to be scheduled (where applicable – depending on program).

The “Research Tasks & Workplace Application” activities provides time to reflect on the content and your own thought processes, experiences, and work habits allowing to make deeper affective and cognitive connections with the content, which contributes to long-term application of the principles that are covered.

The Disability Leadership Program is aligned to BSB40520 Certificate IV in Leadership & Management -  an Australian nationally recognised qualification  and held in high regard internationally

Upon successful completion of this program you will receive a nationally recognised BSB40520 Certificate IV in Leadership & Management. ALA is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO ID: 41012).

What is the mode of delivery?

This is an online self-paced program. This means that you will complete your knowledge and initial skills development through online learning with specific milestones to complete along the way. You will also receive 2 x 1:1 mentoring sessions with an ALA assessor.

Entry Requirements
Who is this course for?
  • This program is designed for people who are developing and emerging leaders and managers in a range of enterprise and industry contexts: office coordinator, leading hand or supervisor. It’s intended to build on your current expertise and knowledge.
  • This program would suit all emerging leaders. It is highly valued by organisations in both the public and private sectors and is delivered online, flexibly, with workplace application and business improvement initiatives meaning that you can continue in your current role as you study.

This qualification reflects the role of individuals working as developing and emerging leaders and managers in a range of enterprise and industry contexts.

As well as assuming responsibility for their own performance, individuals at this level provide leadership, guidance and support to others. They also have some responsibility for organising and monitoring the output of their team.

They apply solutions to a defined range of predictable and unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources.

What is the Entry Criteria?

Minimum age requirements

  • You will need to be at least 18 years old. Education requirement
  • While there are no formal education entry requirements, ALA suggests you should have completed schooling to Year 10 and a minimum of one year of vocational experience, or a nationally recognised qualification at the Certificate II level or higher, or at least two years of relevant vocational experience.
How does this course add value to my career path?

The course requires you to “apply your learning” into your workplace. You will be asked to reflect on your own experiences and organisation as you progress through each module. There are research questions and tasks you will need to complete in your own workplace.

Leadership development assists your career development by providing access to tools which will maximise your performance, including development plans and mentoring support.

Developing leadership skills is important to enhance your personal character as well as providing the necessary tools to achieve success within your career.

Leadership experiences shape individual character while promoting learning through action.

What are the fees?
  • Self-paced eLearning  program including coaching & workplace application = $3,300 (RRP = $3,500
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) only $1,500 (no online license)
