The Program is designed to equip people with the skills to provide first line care to people experiencing a mental health problem. This might involve crisis situations where a person needs support until a trained health care provider can take over.
More likely, however, a person will be demonstrating some of the effects of a mental health problem that are developing over time. In this situation the person may talk to you to seek your help. At other times you will notice something is not quite right and approach the person with the intent of providing assistance.
This is the REESE model of providing mental health first aid. You will learn about mental illness, the causes and the problems that arise from them, as well as how to establish persons at risk, and what you can say to provide support.
Using advanced communication techniques, you will develop your communication skills and abilities to help you provide appropriate support in the most difficult of times. You will learn some advanced communication skills to help you provide appropriate support.
This is a very interactive course and you will practice your new skills and to discuss issues.The course is not a treatment program for people with mental health problems. It is for those who want to know more about these problems and who are prepared to provide assistance when required.
